Leatherback Turtles Hatch in Manabí For the First Time in Nearly 4 Decades

Around 50 leatherback turtle eggs hatched between the afternoon of Saturday, January 23rd, and the morning of Sunday, January 24th, in the north part of the province of Manabí, representing a historic moment for the country, given that the species has not nested, much less hatched hatchlings, in the country for nearly 40 years.
According to Roddy Macias, WildAid’s Coastal Ecuador Project Manager, Ecuador has no recorded births for the leatherback sea turtle, the largest of the sea turtles, since 1983.
WildAid began monitoring the leatherback sea turtle nest on November 26th, 2020, in coordination with the Contamos Contigo Ecuador Foundation, the German nongovernmental organization, GIZ, and the support of the Ministry of the Environment.

Tortugas laúd, en Manabí y luego de casi 4 décadas de primer registro de eclosión

Alrededor de 50 huevos de tortugas laúd eclosionaron entre la tarde del sábado 23 y mañana del domingo 24 en el norte de la provincia de Manabí, constituyéndose en un hecho histórico para el país, ya que desde hace casi 40 años no se conocía del desove y menos aún del nacimiento de esta especie.
Desde 1983, en Ecuador no se tenían registros de nacimientos de tortuga laúd, la más grande de quelonios en el mundo, según Roddy Macías, jefe de proyectos en la costa continental de Ecuador de la organización WildAid.
Este organismo de defensa de especies vulnerables, en coordinación con la fundación Contamos Contigo Ecuador, la organización no gubernamental alemana GIZ y el respaldo del Ministerio del Ambiente, inició el pasado 26 de noviembre el monitoreo y custodia de ese nido de tortugas laúd.
